Seeing the Person First: Social Role Valorisation from Lived Experience

Seeing the Person First: A Lived Experience of Social Role Valorisation

For much of my life, people saw my label before they saw me.

Not my personality.
Not my strengths.
Just the category they placed me in.

Social Role Valorisation (SRV) helped me understand why that happens.

SRV is about the idea that people who hold valued roles in society, like neighbour, worker, volunteer, friend, or advocate, are more likely to be respected and included.

From my lived experience, the biggest barrier was not who I am as a person.
It was the limited roles society expected me to have.

Too often people with labels are placed in roles like “client” or “service user.” While support can be helpful, those roles alone don’t create belonging.

What changed things for me was stepping into ordinary community roles: sharing ideas, contributing, and being seen as someone who has something to offer.

Social Role Valorisation reminds us of something simple but powerful:

Every human being deserves the opportunity to be seen, respected, and valued in their community.
