Safety, Scope and AI

This page explains what we help with, what we deliberately do not do, and how AI is used in our tools. It is here so you can decide whether to trust us with your time.

What Lightening Up is

We help people prepare and navigate. That means helping you understand confusing information, work out what you want to say, put it into clear words, take the next step, and keep track of what was promised.

What Lightening Up is not

We are not a substitute for professional help where professional help is what you actually need.

We do not provide:

  • Legal advice. We can help you write clearly and understand a process. We cannot tell you your legal rights in your specific situation, interpret legislation for your case, or represent you. If your situation involves legal deadlines, tribunals or significant consequences, speak to a lawyer or a community legal centre.
  • Medical advice. We do not diagnose, treat, or advise on health decisions. That is for your treating team.
  • Financial advice. We do not advise on money, benefits eligibility, or financial decisions.
  • Crisis support. We are not a crisis service and we are not monitored in real time.
  • Formal advocacy representation. We help you advocate. We do not advocate on your behalf, attend your meetings, or speak to services for you.

We also do not guarantee outcomes. Nobody honestly can. Preparation improves your chances of being heard. It does not control what a system decides.

How we use AI

Some of our tools use AI to help you turn your situation into clear words. Being specific about what that means.

What AI does

  • Helps explain confusing letters, decisions and processes in plainer language
  • Helps find the key question buried in a long document
  • Helps draft emails, letters, talking points and questions from what you tell it
  • Helps pull out what was promised, by whom, and by when
  • Suggests one manageable next step

What AI will never do

  • Send anything on your behalf. Nothing is emailed or submitted automatically. You review, you edit, you decide, you send.
  • Contact services for you.
  • Make a decision for you.
  • Present a guess as a fact. Where something is uncertain, it will say so.
  • Invent laws, policies, contact details or appeal pathways. If we do not know, we say we do not know.
  • Use your story to help someone else. Your information is yours.
  • Move your information between tools without your approval. You will always be shown what is being carried across, and you can remove any of it.

AI gets things wrong

It does. It can misread your situation, miss context that matters, or word something in a way that does not sound like you.

That is why every AI-generated output in our tools can be edited, shortened, clarified, retoned, or thrown away and started again. Treat it as a first draft written by someone who is trying to help but does not know you. You are the expert on your own situation.

Always check anything that matters: deadlines, reference numbers, names and dates. Do not send a draft you have not read properly.

Your information

We collect the minimum we need. Your saved work stays on your device in our current tools. Nothing is shared or exported without you choosing it. You can delete an individual item or everything, at any time. We do not sell your information to anyone, ever.
