Rights Don’t Stop at a Border
· Updated · Madeleine Nicholas
I get frustrated when people talk about disability rights like they’re a local issue. Something one country figured out and another hasn’t gotten around to yet.
Rights aren’t a postcode thing.
When I look at where the strongest thinking on inclusion is coming from, it’s rarely just one place. Standards get built by people comparing notes across borders, learning from what worked somewhere else and what quietly failed. That’s not bureaucracy. That’s the only way this stuff actually improves.
I think about how much slower everything would move if every community had to reinvent the wheel from nothing. Global alignment means someone somewhere already fought the fight you’re fighting now, and left a map behind.
What frustrates me is when “compliance” becomes the ceiling instead of the floor. Meeting the minimum international standard isn’t leadership. It’s the starting line. Real leadership is doing something with it once you’ve cleared that bar.
Where have you seen someone treat the bare minimum as if it were the finish line?
If you’re ready to go past the bare minimum in your own life, Self Advocacy Unleashed will show you how. Join the waitlist, link in bio.
